Every couple of months, a new book takes me by storm. I get super obsessed with it, i imagine myself into the book, i watch the film and read the book in unison and ponder the relationships and draw similarities between the experiences of the characters and real life itself. I've always been a massive book worm. My latest obsession is with Brideshead revisited.
The main reason why i love Brideshead is because it's about beautiful, rich and glamorous people and the hardships in their lives. This is a classic narrative. We all love it till this day, it's the reason why gossip girl was so successful. Watching the 2008 adaption yesterday, i just couldn't help but get swept up by the beauty of the film. Sebastian Flyte is my favorite character by far. Played by Ben Whishaw, which is no great surprise at all seeing as he's so good with these types of 'delicate boy' roles.
I love Sebastian because he's flamboyant, opulent and just completely tragic. He's what's good for a book because he's entertaining, fun and just generally fascinating to follow. His alcoholism adds to his complexity as a character prompting us to probe him psychologically.
I love his finery and the sorts of imagery that surround him in the movie and the book. My favorite scene in the film is when him and his friend Charles ( Main character ), sit by the gardens at Brideshead and drink glasses after glasses of different wine. They open up new bottles before the last bottle is even finished. They toast to themselves and they watch the sunset. I guess i can't deny it, i'll always be into this sort of romantic and whimsical stuff. I love it. When will our fascination with the fab people ever stop? Never, they are just too much of a fascination because they seem to have no gaps in their lives. Brideshead Revisited is all about the 'truth' behind the beauty, glamour and opulence of privilege. I haven't finished the book yet so don't take my word on this 100%. Maybe there'll be some twist at the end that'll turn everything i've said on its head, but i'm pretty sure that that won't happen.
Brideshead revisited is a real story. What i mean by that is that it's not just fatuous whimsy and gratuitously indulgent. It's actually something you can study and think about because there's depth to it. Having said that, as a novel, i love it. As a reader, it all seems pretty simplistic to me. Simplistic in a sense that it's not presenting anything new or particularly interesting. However, has that dented my love and admiration for the story? Not one bit, away with all that literary garb anyway. It's an entertaining and beautiful story and that's what i care about most of all. Although it's now trite, I think a death between the three principal characters would gash readers in the most fantastic way. I like being stabbed when i read. I like a book that tears me up a little, i like to be affected by literature.
