When sentimental things are done right, it's simply SO right. Most of the time, we shudder at the sentimental side of things. Think overly sweet figurines of angels or sob stories printed in weekly tabloid magazines. But once in a while, it sort of sweeps you up in its sentimental arms and you go off on this journey. You feel connected, in-tune and in empathy with whatever this sentimental thing is. For the most part, i don't like sentimental anything but i am partial to the odd sentimental song every now and then. Last night i was getting so into it, listening to these songs in the dark and reflecting on all these events that have happened in my life and how i can't believe i had survived them all. I thought i'd share some with you here. There are only two because i know how annoying it is when you want to download music but see there's just too many to choose from
Those Good Old Dreams - The Carpenters

I listen to this song on the bus and it makes me think about how your dreams can come true and it often does in a really, really unexpected way. The Carpenters are the Kings of Sentimental and although most people think they are badly sentimental, i feel like they are the best sentimental ever. There's nothing more indulgent than listening to one of their songs and just reflecting, romanticizing and luxuriating in the past and maybe for the future too. This is my favorite lyric in the song :
We have left all the darkness far behind us
All those hopes that we held along the way
Have made it to this day
Like an old love song
Gone for much too long
You hear it once again
And it carries you away
Love me, Please Love me - Michel Polnareff
This is probably the most depressing and heart wrenching song i've ever heard in my life. Without a doubt, i have listened to this and cried about things that didn't go right with matters to do with love and relationships. Sometimes you need a song to be completely direct and Un-ambigious about the message and this one is not vague at all. It's a seventies song and it's in french. It was also featured in the film,
The Dreamers. There is no way you can avoid being overly dramatic in this song. And why shouldn't you be? You're going through some tough stuff.
My french is rusty as hell but here is a loose translation of the first verse :
Love me, Please Love me
I'm crazy over you
Why do you make fun everyday about my poor heart
Do you really take so much pleasure in seeing me suffer?
