" The Culture of Hustle "
That's my motto. In Australia, we are afraid of hustling. What's hustling you ask? Self-promotion, essentially. Recommending yourself and your brand to people out there in a straight forward and direct manner. For me, i used to hate it. No, actually i still hate it a lot. I feel gross and desperate having to be like " Hey, go on on my blog " or " Ever need a writer?" But i do it anyway because if you don't, then nothing can happen for you. Australia has this unfortunate disease called " Tall Poppy Syndrome " where everyone feels the need to put people down back ' to their place '. One of the reasons i'm so desperate to go to America is because there's none of this kind of attitude there. They are built upon this culture of work hard and rise to the top. Which is sort of the same everywhere, but people in America seem to be so passionate and driven and i feel like this is where i have to be.

Hustling... i swear to god.
The moment you go up to someone and you ask them for something, you can almost feel them already being like " No thanks " in their minds. Because don't you feel like, the more you push for something from someone, the more they retaliate? It's like playing hard to get. But in the reality of the business world, i don't think it's quite like boys chase girls in the playground. I'm up against millions of writers all around the world. Some are better than me and some aren't quite as good as me. But the truth of the matter is, those writers who aren't quite as good as me 'make it' because they hustle. They hustle and they self promote and then snap, bang, clang the right timing happens for them and they get somewhere. So hustle, people. You gotta hustle. Promote that brand and don't feel weird when people give you snide looks like you're being despo. The only way writers and creatives survive before they either make it or die completely is the sustaining of their hustling. It's like we're 24 hour working and hustling for that one person to give us that chance. And then ( this is something that i believe in ) once we get our foot in the door, things start coming to us.

  1. Incredible, my lecturer said the exact same thing about Australia vs America regarding the tall poppy syndrome thing just today!

  2. It's true, dude. We're letting ourselves down by bringing ourselves down.
