A&E INTERVENTION

Corinne the honor roll Heroin addict

I spent a good portion of the afternoon watching Intervention in bed yesterday because of being so drowsy and lethargic off my medication. I'm pretty ' addicted ' to this show at the moment. I have known lots of people to rave on about how entertaining ( albeit tragic ) the show is and although i've always known about the show, i never really took to it as much as those around me. Anyway, i decided to give it a go yesterday and now I can't stop watching it. One episode turned into about seven episodes back to back. I couldn't get over how dramatic the show was. That was the main thing that got me hooked. It was all so ridiculously real.

These people were INTENSE. The most intense episodes that really affected me was one about this woman who's an alcoholic. She was really beautiful and had this charmed life where she was this successful interior decorator and actress. Also this other one about this finance executive who used to make 200,000 a year but is now a homeless man living on condo rooftops or occasionally even sleeping in the park. Looking at him, you'd never have guessed that he was homeless. He had all the accoutrements of a wealthy, young go getter. He didn't look homeless at all ( image below )  He spent all his earnings and inheritance on cocaine.

You seriously can't beat real-life drama. I mean, i don't know if the producers of intervention ham up the people on the show to be extra dramatic but i don't even think they'd need to given the truly unstable and hostile places these people are mentally in. I couldn't imagine what it would've been like to have come from so much to so little based on a substance, especially in Tommy's incident. I mean, i know the substance is powerful as heck but to risk all that you have and to give up all that you have just because you love the high so much? Do i understand how this feels?

Lately, i've been thinking a lot about 'highs' and our relationship to them. To wanting more, to needing it to feel good, OK, reassured. Synthetic highs and natural highs are just as good as each other, to me. When i watch Intervention and see the types of people who are driven to the absolute pits thanks to their addiction, i wonder if there really is anything in the world that can fill the void inside of them which have come about by events which can't be undone. Some of the people on the show have experienced more trauma than others, but i don't think it's what kind of event that's happened which is of critical importance. What's more important is the personality and how successful they can manage in coming to terms with the outcomes of their life.

PS. I reviewed 1Q84 by Murakami here and i am looking forward to his next novel so, so much
