Success stories such as Madonna here are almost always an example of self creationism. Or as she would probably prefer to dub it, " Re-invention " |
One of the defining features of adulthood to me, is the shedding of things you've been taught by the institutions, family members and even friends that you've grown up with in favor of values and beliefs which are your own. Adults, are creatures of their own creation. They become rich from poor, smart from stupid, enlightened from ignorant. No matter where they were born or what their upbringing was like, they can escape from that by the right of individuality. Although our growth and development is a result of contributions by many different people in our lives, we have the last say in whether it sits with us or not. This especially rings true for children of migrants. If you've come from another country like me, you've probably wondered from time to time if you'd be the way you are if you had never left where you were born.
For those who have had an upbringing in strong allegiance with a particular belief, value system or indeed class system, then it's interesting to see how these people stray from what they were born 'into' or whether they choose to stay where they were 'deigned', so to speak. I'm a massive believer in self-creationism. It's a term that i coined just today and it means making something out of nothing. Making a ' something ' of yourself that isn't traceable at all to your roots, your nationality or your class. It's the purest form of you. You are the origin of the 'thing'. Self creationists fascinate me because it's as if they have no parents. It's as if they have no trace or evidence of being from anyone else but themselves. If we do get to see their parents, by god do they seem like complete different species of people altogether. You then wonder how far someone could stray from their roots and what possessed them to be so, so different to where they are from.
I consider these things to be what makes me, me. On the outside atleast ! What objects would you say 'defined' you? |
The thing is, it totally works and
it takes a lifetime to realise that everything is more or less
simply a matter of 'engrained' opinion.
