FALLEN

http://art8amby.files.wordpress.com/2010/10/fallen-issue-5-eva-helene-by-mads-teglers.jpgI just found out that one of the first magazines which took me on board as a writer has closed down. Just how long ago, i'm not sure but sadly, i'm not surprised at all that they've stopped production. This is the second magazine made in Melbourne that has closed its doors in the last two years. " Wet Ink " which i was never published in but one of my favorite lecturers in university wrote for closed last year. I guess the most exact way of saying how i feel is a defeated sense of non-surprising? That was really un-grammatical but you know exactly what i mean. I'm not surprised and that non-surprised feeling is also tied up with a sense of defeat.
It's so hard for magazines to stay afloat. It all basically comes down to money issues in the end and how many people are buying your publication.

Fallen magazine was a really beautiful publication that i was super proud to be a part of. I used to be really naive and believe that if you had a nice looking publication and interesting writing, then you could do OK. Truth of the matter is, the ingredient to a thriving enterprise is as elusive as any unsolved mystery in the world. I remember the first time i was published in print in Fallen and how they sent me a copy of the issue in the mail for free. It felt so amazing to be on paper in a magazine that was on the shelves in Mag nation and newsagents too. That people would be reading my writing in this really nice magazine that i loved, felt partly like some kind of achievement. It's a sad fact but there'll be more magazines which will be shutting its doors in the future. I just hope that these magazines will have a chance to hit their peak before their demise.

PS : You can read all the work i did for FALLEN in the CV tab of this blog.
