The Ephemeral nature of Work/Casual work/Jobs

They say that most people go through up to three or maybe even four career changes in their lifetime. Upon first hearing this, i was a bit taken aback. Career changes are big changes, it seems as something as serious and establishing as a 'career' couldn't simply be up and left more than once. A career is a long term thing that takes time to build and surely, will take time to depart from. A career isn't a job, it's a holistic life experience. Can we really switch up to three times? I'm skeptical we can go through so many changes in a career, but in a job? That's absolutely believable.

I've had a few jobs now and i feel like it's time to say something. Jobs are ephemeral. Especially casual jobs which i've come to have a very love/hate relationship with. Casual work has its perks and its downsides which we're all pretty familiar with. You do have rights but there aren't many. You are basically an individual that is used when you are needed and used less when you aren't. You are not a permanent fixture of a team which subsequently means that you are more or less, undervalued. All my jobs thus far have been casual positions and i've attained a steady income from them all. But i guess
i'm over this now, i want to be someone permanent and important in a company business. I don't want to simply be a worker that's called upon when they are needed and discarded or distanced when they are not necessary.

To me, i feel like this is a big demand. Permanent and secure positions in jobs are completely dependent upon the individuals ability to sustain a particular level of output. What i've learnt so far in life is that nothing matters to your employers besides your ability to keep their jobs alive. In order for you to survive, you have to make sure that your boss is also surviving. What work and jobs all boil down to, is how well you make your boss look to their boss. Everyone's got a boss. It's kind of weird when you think about that for a second. When i don't do so well at work, my managers and supervisors act like they care but i know that they really don't. I'm not whinging about this though, i'm stating this as a fact. What hurts the most isn't the fact that they don't care, but it's the fact that you sometimes can't account for the changes that happen in your life. Sometimes these changes happen to you and how you manage it ( or don't manage it ) means losing your job. A career is different. For one, a career is something that you direct and maneuver yourself. You might have a bosses or several bosses in the process of your career but a career involves yourself, the person as part of the lifeblood. A career is about earning money in a way that rests upon actual convictions.

I feel like once you get a job you understand more about life through the lens of a bigger scale. The world isn't about you but about your servitude to the system that you are simultaneously drawing and depositing into. That's really what jobs are.
